Frequently Asked Questions

The initiative kicks-off October 29, 2018 with the YouthSMART Summit. This catalyst event brings together 300+ “SMART Leader” students and their teachers to participate in a powerful day of sharing, learning, and subject matter co-development. Hosted at Calgary’s Genesis Centre (7555 Falconridge Blvd. NE) the event combines large group presentations, local celebrities, inspirational speakers, and small group discussions. It is designed to generate an awareness of mental health topics, while actively empowering youth to take responsibility in leading a climate of well-being and resiliency within their school communities. School teams will utilize their learnings from the day to spark meaningful mental health promotions amongst their peers, and leave the event with year-long, youth-led project action plans to address mental health topics in their school. *Although highly recommended, schools are not necessarily required to attend the summit to participate in the initiative.*

Reaching close to 25,000 students each year, CMHA Calgary’s Youth Education Program “YouthSMART”, integrates collaborative, youth-initiated mental health learning opportunities in local junior and senior high schools. SMART stands for, Supporting Mental Health and Resiliency Together. You can find us online at YouthSMART.ca

YouthSMART (Youth Supporting Mental Health and Resiliency Together) is a customizable year-long initiative designed to generate an awareness of mental health topics, which allows for student leaders and their designated teachers to work collaboratively to execute ongoing mental health awareness activities, unique to each school community.

The 2018 YouthSMART Youth Mental Health Summit will be held at the Genesis Centre. The address is 7555 Falconridge Blvd NE. Our event will be held in the Feature Gymnasium.

For those driving, most will take either Deerfoot South or North depending on your location in the city. Turn onto McKnight Blvd NE travelling East. Turn North onto Falconridge Blvd NE. The Genesis Centre will be on your left hand side.

For those taking transit, take the C-Train to the Saddletown Station. You can then walk to the Genesis Centre or then take bus 23 and get off at Genesis Centre.

There is lots of parking at the Genesis Centre, however, we encourage participants to organize a ride or to be dropped off at the location.

For anyone planning to park at the event, you will be able to use the parking lots onsite as indicated below. The parking lot to the northeast of the Genesis Centre features the main entrance to the Feature Gymnasium.

Registration check-in begins at 9:00 a.m. Our opening remarks will begin at 9:30 a.m. The day will wrap-up at approximately 2:00 p.m.

There is no cost to attend the Youth Summit.

CMHA is happy to provide the summit to schools free of cost, but will not cover the cost of paying substitutes for teachers attending.

The summit is for junior and senior high school teachers and students. We are inviting 2 (two) teachers/counsellors and up to 6 (six) students from each invited school. Teachers are required to attend the summit and supervise their students at all times. Teachers must also register on behalf of their school.

We ask that your school do not bring parent volunteers to the Youth Summit. The day has been designed for teachers and students.

The registration page can be found here.

Teachers can register their schools starting Monday, September 17, 2018.

The event is first-come first-served. Schools interested in attending must be registered by Wednesday, October 17, 2018, but we suggest early registration to avoid disappointment as registration will close once we reach capacity. Last year’s event did sell out prior to registration closing.

We don’t require the names of your students when registering. If you do have the names, that is great, but we only require the number of students you will be bringing.

All students attending must be accompanied by a teacher and therefore students cannot register on their own. Teachers must register on behalf of their school and the students they intend to bring.

We are expecting approximately 300 people. We suggest your school registers early to avoid disappointment.

The keynote speaker will be Olympic Speedskater Anastasia Bucsis.

Lunch will be provided to all attendees. If you have dietary requirements and are unsure about the lunch we provide, we suggest you bring your own lunch.

We suggest you bring a lunch that does not require the use of a microwave or a kettle.

Sometimes talking about mental health can be upsetting. While we are planning for a fun day of activities, we will have certified counsellors onsite for anyone who wishes to speak to a professional.

Each school’s registration package will be at the registration desk when you check-in. We ask that teachers bring their students’ signed media release forms. We will provide all other materials needed for the day.

Yes, we are hoping there will be media coverage of the YouthSMART Youth Mental Health Summit. We ask that teachers and students print off and fill out our media release and bring it to the Youth Summit. Those who don’t want to be on camera or filmed will be easily identified.
